The study of the case of Baluch nationalism
Having given a few samples of an immense body of literature on
nationalism, it is necessary to review the literature on our
case study as well. While the Balochi national movement in
Pakistan has been able to establish itself both politically and
militarily as one of the most organized national movement in the
region, it’s counterpart in Iran has less successful in the
retards. As a result, the bulk of literature on the subject has
focused on the Balochi nationalism in
Iran.
In this regard, this study would serve to fill the gap in
knowledge about the case under discussion.
A survey of the existing literature on the subject indicates
that early information on Baluchi history is scattered in the
works of the medieval Muslim historians (of both Arab and
Persian origins). These are followed by an extensive range of
studies produced by the British scholars, contributions, which
are the first systematic studies of their kind; include
historical, geo-political, anthropological, linguistic, and
archeological studies on the subjects. The post-colonial era in
the Pakistani Baluchistan has also witnessed an upsurge in works
written in English, Urdu, and Baluchi dealing with the general
history of the Baluch and
Baluchistan
which reflected the growing concern over Baluchi nationalism in
the aftermath of the British departure in 1947. In this
category, the words of Muhammad S.K. Baluch, Mir Khudabux
B.Marri, Ahamad Yar Khan, and Gul Khan Nasir are but a few
examples. There are also several general works written by
Iranian authors in Farsi dealing specifically with the
historical and the general socioeconomic conditions of the
Baloch in western
Baluchistan.
These works however, do not deal directly with the issue of
Balochi nationalism; and as such they are not reviewed here.
However, they will be used as such, they are not first chapter
dealing with the basis of Baluchi nationalism particularly in
the section on its history.
The two pioneering works on the subject works on the subject of
the Baluchi nationalism, are by selig Harrison and Inayatuallah
Baluch.*8*
Harrison’s work’s the most comprehensive and
up-to-date study of the case of Balochi nationalism, it’s inner
dynamics, and its regional and international implications.
Nevertheless, the work’s focus of analysis is more geared toward
the Baloch movement in
Pakistan than that Iran. That is even more so with the work of
Inayatollah Baloch. The only other political study of the case
is by Akhardad baloch, an Iranian baloch. This work however, is
useful only in analyzing the Balochi national movement and its
organization in western Balochistan after Iranian revolution in
1979, while hardly touching upon the movement prior to that
time.
*9* Other major contribution on the history of Balochi nationalism
are several work by Jnayatt Baluch, a historian, in
west germany. These and other historical work to which reference
will be made in the next chapter are indispensable in any study
of Balochi nationalism from a historical perspective. Another
article dealing specifically with the issue is by Nader Entesar,
Which is also geared more toward Baluch nationalism in Pakistan
and Afghanistan than that in Iran.*10*
